Simple Hack To Boost Conversion Rates In Your Welcome Flow

The Inbox Newsletter

Hey it's Max from The Inbox Newsletter.

Recently been running a discount strategy that's become one of our favorites…

It's a great way to keep subscribers engaged all the way through checkout instead of losing them halfway.

Today I'm walking you through the full setup, the data behind it, and how to extend it across every other flow you're running.

Let's get into it!

Keeping The Mystery Through The Welcome Flow

Maybe you’ve heard of the mystery discount pop-up…

Instead of just telling people “Hey you have 10% off enter your email”…

You tell them, “hey you have a mystery discount, enter your email to find out what it is”

If you haven't run it yet, you should. I preach that a lot around here.

Take a look at the numbers from this example:

Mystery Discount Pop-Up vs Flat "20% Off" Pop-Up.

The mystery pulled 22.57% opt-in vs 14.94% on the flat 20% off…. intrigue alone gets more people to opt in just to see what they got.

So safe to say it works!

But let’s not stop there…

What most brands don't realize is that you can actually take the mystery even further by not revealing the discount amount until checkout!

Now, you might be wondering, wouldn't that annoy customers or make them bounce?

Definitely not.

Most brands run the mystery pop-up but then immediately reveal the discount in the welcome flow email.

But at that point the mystery is solved and all curiosity is gone!

Which is why the play here to test is to keep the mystery going…

Give subscribers a code, but don't tell them what it's worth. From their POV the only way to find out is to add something to cart and go through checkout.

That gap between "I have a code" and "I know what it's worth" is what keeps subscribers engaged with your site instead of losing interest once the mystery's solved.

It's also a win-win because subscribers are now more likely to trigger your cart and checkout abandonment flows, giving you way more chances to close the sale…

I've seen this move conversion rates up to 50-100% on some accounts. Not universal, but honestly one of the easiest tests to run!

Where To Apply This Beyond The Welcome Flow

You can run the mystery angle across:

  • Abandoned checkout emails: when you want them to come back and find out what their code is actually worth

  • Browse abandoned emails: when you want to nudge browsers back to check out what their code unlocks

  • Post-purchase emails: when you want to lock in a repeat purchase by offering a mystery discount on their next order

  • Replenishment reminders: when you want to push repeat customers to reorder with a mystery discount waiting at checkout

  • Win-back campaigns: when you want to bring lapsed customers back with a mystery discount that only reveals itself at checkout

  • Standard campaign sends: when you want subscribers to click through just to see what the discount is

Try this on your next campaign or flow and see how it works for you!
