One Simple Trick To Improve Your Cart Abandon Email Flow Performance

The Inbox Newsletter

Hey it's Max from The Inbox Newsletter.

There are more window shoppers and abandoners than ever right now (people hitting your site, checking things out, then bouncing before they buy).

Which means every small improvement to your cart abandonment flow is even more important now than ever.

Today I'm sharing one simple change to your cart abandonment flow that'll immediately start converting more of those window shoppers into buyers.

Let's get into it!

Customize Your Messaging Based On Buyer Status

The one simple change is splitting your cart abandonment flow based on whether the subscriber has bought from you before or not…

The reason this works so well is because it turns your cart abandonment flow into something that actually meets subscribers where they are in the journey.

Non-buyers get first-time-buyer messaging, and past buyers get repeat-purchase messaging.

Both sides feel like the email was written for them specifically.

Cart Abandonment Flow Split By Buyer Status At The Top

How To Customize Each Path

Once the split is set up, here's the content we like to put on each side:

Non-buyers:

80% of non-buyer abandonments happen within 7 days of someone opting in to your email list… which means these people still have their welcome discount that they signed up for live… sp tell them!

Put the welcome discount reminder right in the face of the user. This is the biggest impact you can make.

Something as simple as "Hey, quick reminder you still have this discount code on your order" is enough to move the needle.

From there, you can lean into education, social proof, and community-building to help them get over any first-time buyer hesitation…

Past buyers:

Skip the welcome discount reminder entirely in Emails 1 and 2 since they don't need a bribe to come back yet. You can save a discount for Emails 3 and 4 if they still haven't converted…

Then adjust your wording to speak to someone who already trusts the brand, reference their past order, and speak like they're already in the club!

Since they've already been through the whole "why should I buy" process, all you need is a quick reminder about the specific product in their cart and you're golden.

And if you're a subscription brand, this is a great spot to push a subscription instead of a one-time purchase!

This structure is much more effective plus every subscriber feels like the email was written just for them…

Try it out for yourself.
