My Honest Take On Gamified Pop-Ups

The Inbox Newsletter

Hey it's Max from The Inbox Newsletter.
I get asked about gamified pop-up forms all the time…
So today I want to share my honest thoughts on them, plus a secret sauce setup we run that gets the best of both worlds.
Let's get into it!

What I Actually Think About Gamified Pop Ups
If you've bought anything online in the last year, you've probably seen a million of these already.

Gamified Pop Up Examples
My honest thoughts are that they work wonderfully.
They typically convert way higher than the standard static pop-up because subscribers actually want to engage with them.
You should test different layouts of them across your campaigns…
That said, there's a different type of pop-up form I actually prefer running.
And that pop-up is the quiz pop-up.

Quiz Pop up Form Example
Here's why I actually prefer running them for brands.
You get real customer data. Instead of just capturing a name and email, subscribers actually tell you something about themselves you can use across the rest of their journey with the brand.
Higher conversions off the pop-up. Once subscribers admit something about themselves, they're already committing more to the brand than they would with a plain email capture.
Welcome flow segmentation + profile tagging. Whichever answer a subscriber picks becomes a tag on their profile that you can use to send a fully tailored welcome flow + tailored campaigns down the line.
The only real trade-off is quiz pop-ups typically get slightly fewer opt-ins than gamified pop-ups.
But still… it is my recommendation for pretty much every brand.
The data across every subscriber more than makes up for the slightly lower opt-in count over the long run.
The Most Effective Pop Up Form Setup
In an ideal world, we want to get the higher opt-ins of a gamified pop-up and all the customer data of a quiz pop-up in one setup.
And the good news is there's a way to get both...
Just follow these 3 simple steps to build it out.
Step 1: Run a gamified pop-up as the email capture. Any layout works (Plinko, Spin to Win, Scratch Off). The interactive element will pull the highest opt-ins by a mile.
Step 2: Phone capture on the following step. After subscribers "win," use the next step to grab their phone in exchange for the code they just won.
Step 3: Add the quiz question as the final step. You can add something like "what problem are you trying to solve?" so you capture the same customer data you'd get from a standalone quiz pop-up + unlock the segmentation and tagging that comes with it.
And bang. You now have a pop-up setup pulling triple duty for you.
Every new subscriber will walk into your list already tagged, segmented, and ready for tailored messaging from day one..

If you want to set this up on your own account, we build these using Alia across pretty much every brand we run. Best platform on the market for the job.
Try it out and watch what your opt-in rate does across your next round of subscribers!
