I Spoke On Stage At One of The Biggest Ecom Events Of The Year Yesterday

The Inbox Newsletter

Hey it’s Max from The Inbox Newsletter.

Yesterday, I shared a stage with Taylor Holiday.

One of the biggest names in ecom.

But what’s even wilder is realizing I wasn’t just there to learn from him — I was there to add value too.

Here’s some of the questions I was asked and the answers I shared (and what I didn’t say out loud but wish I did):

1. Thoughts on Hiring Outside The US?

The question came up: "Do you hire international or U.S.?"

Hiring both in the US vs internationally both have their merits.

But let’s be real: most brands say they want a U.S. agency... until they see the $10k/month minimum price tag.

If brands want a US based agency they better be ready to pay US based prices!

Our agency hires global talent and I love it.

For the work ethic, the culture, the hunger.

International talent often has something to prove and it shows. Our 95% client retention speaks for

This also allows us to be able to charge 50% lower than US-only based agencies, which many brands love.

The same or better quality of work, but a lower price. It’s why clients love us.

That being said, if U.S. only is your hill to die on, just understand it’s gonna cost you 2–3x. Choose your hill wisely.

2. Thoughts On Adding Services to Your Agency?

Every agency bro wants to upsell.

“Add CRO! Add Meta! Add UGC!”

I get it. Sounds good in theory. And it has a place.

But here’s the thing... We already have waitlists for email and SMS.

That’s not an accident, it’s because we stay in our lane.

We are relentlessly focused on being the premier retention agency in the space.

Could we slap on some extra services and make a quick buck? Probably.

But it would dilute our product. And I’m not about to build a leaky bucket.

Will I expand eventually?

Sure, but only when I find the right partner who can do it better than I can.

Until then: email and SMS only. That’s the game.

3. Reporting: The Balance of Templates and “Oh Sh*t” Moments

Reporting came up.

My take is that consistency is non-negotiable.

But flexibility is what makes you world-class.

Here’s how we do it:

  • Weekly updates every Tuesday

  • Monthly + Quarterly slide decks with takeaways

  • Random ad-hoc reports when something big happens (like a surprise product drop or unexpected data shift)

Templates keep us on track.

But it’s the ad-hoc stuff that makes clients feel like we’re in their business.

Both matter. Don’t just rely on one.

4. Where My Time Goes (and Why I Guard It Like a Pitbull)

This one was important: “How do you spend your time as you grow?”

My answer: The highest leverage thing I can do for Well Copy is make content and close deals. Period.

Every morning I block 4 hours for:

  • Writing content

  • Doing audits for brands in our pipeline

  • Supporting the sales team

After that, it’s training the team, business development, and handling whatever fire pops up.

Be relentless with your time and make sure you have time set aside every day to push the business forward.

If you don’t set time aside, you’ll just be catching up with fires all day.

Sitting on that stage was amazing. But what felt even better than the honor… Was realizing I had real value to give back.

I’m not building a big agency… I’m building a great one. One that’s proud to sit next to Taylor and not just nod along.

PS - Something big is coming…

I'm opening a private 90-day mentorship for a small group of brands. Private Slack, group, calls with me, 24/7 access to my team, exclusive templates, and a full email course.

We’ll work directly with you to build your full email engine from scratch… flows, campaigns, segmentation, calendar, everything.

Same stuff we use to generate $10M+/mo for clients.

If you want in on the waitlist, just reply to this email and I’ll let you know when we open up.

Only launching this to people who raise their hand.

Respond and I’ll add you to the list.
