How to Re-Engage Past Profiles

I got MULTIPLE questions on how to re-engage past profiles.

I happen to be very experienced in dealing with this… 😉 

Have a Ton of Email Profiles You Don’t Know What To Do With?

This happens quite frequently with ecom brands as they start scaling.

They aren’t actively sending emails but have tens of thousands of emails from past buyers or sign ups.

And now they are asking how do they get the most out of all of these profiles.

For one, acknowledge you already messed up big time. People today have the attention span of a 2 year old. If you have had their email for months and haven’t sent them any emails they will have forgotten about you.

The truth is, you won’t be able to get a lot of these people back…

If you’re hoping I give you a magic trick that automatically gets every unengaged profile to be a raving fan of your brand, I apologize.

In dealing with these lists, I’ve found that only 10-20% ish will come back. The remaining are gone forever.

Don’t lose sleep over these subscribers who aren’t interested anymore or haven’t engaged.

It’s more harmful to spend so much time and effort to bring them back when so few will.

And… if you’re sending to these unengaged profiles often, you’re going to hurt your deliverability and impact your ability to land in the primary inbox for your current active subscribers.

This doesn’t mean it’s game over though…

Re-Engage Your Past Profiles

Don’t overthink it too much…

But there are a couple things you need to be aware of when trying to get these people back.

  1. If you have never sent emails from your email address / IP you need to warm them up.

You can’t just take a fresh email address and send to 50,000 people at once, you will get marked as spam very fast.

You have to slowly open things up over time.

Start with sending to 200 people from the list, then to 400, then 800, etc and just keep doubling / increasing by 50%.

Make sure to keep sending to people who open your prior emails, they will continue to open!

  1. Send regular emails… pretend like nothing happened

People ask about sending “are you interested” emails. The problem with these is that everyone will say they aren’t interested.

Pretend like you’ve been sending to them consistently and they will go along with it.

Don’t make a big deal out of starting to send emails… just get going.

  1. Get your high-engaging flows live

People will engage with welcome emails, abandoned browse, abandoned cart, and post-purchase emails.

We wanted to get these built out asap and set live asap.

People would be for sure to engage with these emails and boost our reputation.

Plus, flows are triggered randomly and people flow through them at low volume… so it's not like we're blasting out thousands of emails at once and raising red flags in the eyes of inbox providers.

I think it would be most helpful if you just watched me do this in action…

I have this example of taking a fresh account from nothing to generating $30k/mo and 40% of revenue from email in less than 60 days.

DON’T try to overcomplicate your emails.

In most cases the simpler the better.
