How To Pull More SMS Subscribers From Your Pop Up Forms

The Inbox Newsletter

Hey it's Max from The Inbox Newsletter.

Honestly, I love SMS more than email marketing.

Quicker action from customers, more rev/recipient, more action…

Which is why I'm always testing new ways to get more people onto our SMS list.

Today, I want to show you 3 pop up strategies you can steal to start pulling more SMS subscribers that requires zero new pop-up design, zero new offer, and takes only minutes to set up.

Let's get into it!

1. The Reply-Y-For-Your-Code

Here’s something I recently realized messes up your sms opt-ins…

Most pop-ups drop the discount code the second someone finishes filling it out.

It feels like the right move (since you’re delivering value fast), but it's actually one of the biggest reasons SMS performance stays low.

Here's why…

When someone opts in to SMS through your pop-up, they get a confirmation text asking them to reply "Y" to consent to marketing (unless you use a postscript pop-up).

If your pop-up already handed them the code before that text arrives, they have zero reason to reply back. So they don't.

The fix is simple….

Instead of dropping the discount at the end of the pop-up, make the last step something like "Reply Y to your text to get your code."

Now the code is the reward for confirming SMS consent, not something they already have.

If you just give the code straight up… you will get people to opt-in to SMS but 75% of them won’t consent to receive messages.

Just take a look below at the different in profiles being skipped in this welcome sms message based on the two pop-up types.

2. On Site Opt-In

If you happen to be on PostScript, they have a sharper version of this same opt-in.

Instead of just asking for a "Y" reply, PostScript's Onsite Opt-In flow texts the subscriber a code that they then have to enter back into the pop-up to confirm.

Why this works:

  • It creates a multi-step commitment (opt-in → receive code → enter code → done)

  • The subscriber never has to leave your site or switch to their messaging app to opt in

  • The extra confirmation step naturally filters out fake numbers and bots

It ends up being a little more friction for the customer, but you get a lot more quality on your SMS list from the brand side.

3. Add A Retargeting SMS Pop-Up

Even a strong pop-up leaves a lot on the table.

If you're getting 15% opt-in that's great, but it also means 85% of visitors closed out without giving you anything. Once they close it, that's it… They’re gone and you get no second shot.

So, you build yourself a second shot!

Duplicate your existing pop-up and change the targeting to "show to email subscribers only."

Now anyone who's already on your email list but hasn't opted into SMS gets a pop-up specifically asking for their number, with your welcome offer (or a custom one built just for this).

You already have their email, so you're just building out the SMS side of the relationship.

Takes minutes to set up and doesn't cannibalize anything else you're running.

Try one (or all 3) of these this week and let the data speak for itself! You'll see what I mean about SMS consent being one of the easiest levers to move…
