How to Increase Opt-Ins by 50%+ Overnight
The Inbox Newsletter
Hey it’s Max from The Inbox Newsletter.
Maybe you’ve seen these kinds of pop-ups that I’m going to break down before, maybe you haven’t.
BUT, they are the real deal.
Let’s get into it.
The Problem With Most Pop-Ups
The classic pop-up just asking for someone’s email directly is rinsed,
Everybody sees it and expects it.
We’ve gotten to a point where whenever someone sees that kind of pop-up they automatically will start moving their thumb toward the top right corner of the screen to close the form.
Pop-up form conversion rates as a result have been on a steady decline over the years, and numbers are below KPI in 99% of cases if you use an opt-in directly asking for the email address.
On top of it being overused, it’s also perceived to be a lot of work for the customer.
Typing an email address will take a few seconds of their time, which for them is precious and when they are doomscrolling they are protective about it.
This, again, will harm your conversion rates… making it seem like more up-front work.
But what if you can make it seem like less up-front work?
And use a different style of pop-up that customers aren’t used to and are more likely to engage with?
The Questionnaire Pop-Up
This type of pop-up will tell customers they have a discount ready for them, all they have to do is answer a quick question.
This layout absolutely crushes and we see up to 20% opt-in rates for our clients using this (industry average is around 3-4%).
Why does it work so well?
Low barrier of entry to claim the discount (answer a quick question)
Interactive element that feels custom to the customer
Different layout and experience than the customer is used to
It feels like the customer earned their discount, rather than getting a free handout like everybody else
This first step makes it seem like all they have to do to earn their discount is answer the question. Only after they answer it, the email request comes in.
Commitment Bias is a psychological phenomenon in humans where after complying with one action, they are much more likely to comply with a follow-up action.
This is also a pop-up and experience people aren’t used to seeing since it’s relatively new, so people are intrigued and want to try it out.
We usually see 40-50% engagement rates from people who see the form and answer the first question, which gives you great zero-party data in itself.
The ability to increase conversions AND get more customer data to be able to segment and send custom data is an opportunity you shouldn’t ignore!
Step 1 | Step 2 |
You can build these forms in Klaviyo with limited functionality, or use a platform like amped.io or alialearn.com
Amped and Alia are extra costs, so be aware of that.

Notes:
I wanted to call out the slice at the very top of the email.
You don’t see a lot of brands trying new things and experimenting with different features in their emails.
I love how they did this and really got their message across at the very top of the email.
Always experiment and try new things!
