Ditch The Generic Discount Codes

The Inbox Newsletter

Hey it's Max from The Inbox Newsletter.
Today I'm walking you through a quick tweak that can seriously move the needle in how your customers act on your offers.
Something I’ve been experimenting with more recently…
It’s a small change, but this one shift can make a sizable difference.
Let's get into it!

Ditch The Generic Discount Code
If you didn't already know, your discount code doesn’t have to be the generic name of the flow or campaign it's coming from.
Which means you can absolutely stop using generic codes like WELCOME10 or SAVE15 in your emails.
Instead, try a code that looks random and one-time, like HI-4XY7G.

Example Of A Random-Looking Discount Code.
This works because it looks like a code that was generated specifically for that one customer.
And when your email says "your custom discount code expires in 24 hours," the customer actually believes it and acts on it.
Because from the customer’s POV, a code they could have guessed will never carry the same urgency as one that feels made specifically for them.
Where To Test It First
You can honestly use this move for anything, like your abandonment flows, winback, and promo campaigns…
But the ONE place you can really try it to see a big lift is your welcome flow.
Your welcome flow is the highest-ROI flow in your entire account, so if you swap in a random-looking code instead of the generic one, you're setting yourself up for a way bigger conversion lift on those Day 0 subscribers who were already the most likely to buy.

Welcome Flow Discount Comparison
Just make sure you hyperlink the code inside your email so people don't have to manually type it in.
That way they go straight to your site with the discount already applied, and they get to checkout with zero friction.
I know you may be wondering… why not just use REAL random discount codes generated by Klaviyo? Well, sometimes they break. And you are limited on design capabilities. With a static code, you can drop the code into your designs and not have to worry about needing to mix in a Klaviyo text block with the code.
Results may vary by brand, so run it as an actual split test before rolling this out!
Try it out and let me know how it goes.
